An isotropic radiator is a theoretical point source of electromagnetic (or) sound waves that radiate the same intensity of radiation in all directions.

The radiation pattern is as shown:

Extra Concept:

  • The isotropic radiator has a gain of unity, which means having a gain factor of 1 in all directions.
  • In terms of dB, it can be called as 0 dB gain
  • Real antennas are not isotropic radiations but have a pattern of more and less power in different directions.
