Let upstream speed = x km/h

⇒ Downstream speed = 2x km/h (Given)

Downstream: Distance = 32 km, Time = (t + 1) hours

⇒ Speed = Distance ÷ Time = 32 ÷ (t + 1)

Upstream: Distance = 12 km, Time = t hours

⇒ Speed = Distance ÷ Time = 12 ÷ t

Now equating speeds:

⇒ 32 ÷ (t + 1) = 2 × (12 ÷ t)

⇒ 32 ÷ (t + 1) = 24 ÷ t

Cross-multiply:

⇒ 32 × t = 24 × (t + 1)

⇒ 32t = 24t + 24

⇒ 32t − 24t = 24

⇒ 8t = 24

⇒ t = 24 ÷ 8 = 3

Thus, the correct answer is 3.
