Composition of Rail Steel
Following the composition of steel are used in the construction rails:
a) For ordinary rails:
High carbon steel having the following composition is used for manufacturing ordinary rails
- Carbon – 0.55 to 0.68 %
- Manganese – 0.65 to 0.90 %
- Silicon – 0.05 to 0.3 %
- Sulphur – 0.05 % or below
- Phosphorus – 0.05 % or below
b) For rails on points and crossing
Medium carbon steel having the following composition is used for manufacturing of rails on point and crossing
- Carbon – 0.5 to 0.6 %
- Manganese – 0.95 to 1.25 %
- Silicon – 0.05 to 0.20 %
- Sulphur – 0.06 % or below
- Phosphorus – 0.06 % or below.
