Given:

The sum of the ages of 5 children born at intervals of 3 years each is 50 years.

Formula Used:

Age of oldest child = (Total sum of ages - Sum of ages of younger children) / Number of children

Calculation:

Let the age of the youngest child be x.

Ages of the children: x, x + 3, x + 6, x + 9, x + 12

Total sum of ages:

x + (x + 3) + (x + 6) + (x + 9) + (x + 12) = 50

⇒ 5x + 30 = 50

⇒ 5x = 20

⇒ x = 4

Age of the oldest child = x + 12

⇒ 4 + 12 = 16

The age of the oldest child is 16 years.
