Turbidity:
It is the extent up to which light is scattered or absorbed by the suspended solids present in the water.
Causes of turbidity:
- Due to inorganic particles like clay and silt.
- Due to organic particles like plant fibers, algae.
- Due to some immiscible liquids like clay and silt.
Impacts of turbidity:
- Psychological Impact
- Act as an adsorption site for both chemical and biological reagent
- Precipitation in the pipes
- Hindered photosynthesis is done by algae.
Measurement of turbidity using:
- Turbidity Meter – Based on the Absorption principle (Limit greater than 5NTU)
- Jackson Turbidity Meter – Based on the Absorption principle. (Limit greater than 25NTU)
- Nephelometer - works on the principle of light scattering. (Limit 0 to 1000NTU)
