Mission of UN Habitat

  • UN-Habitat is developing an integrated and demand-driven strategy in India that includes improving urban planning and design frameworks, offering technical and policy advice for upgrading infrastructure, putting pilot projects into place for learning-by-doing, and mainstreaming innovations by testing technological solutions to improve India’s urban landscape. Interventions by UN-Habitat are organized around the following major pillars:
    • Safe, inclusive, resilient, and sustainable cities and regions are the result of improved policy frameworks that emphasize inclusive planning and sustainable development through efficient and participatory planning tools at the local and regional levels.
    • Design tools and procedures to encourage communal housing with an emphasis on energy efficiency and efficient waste management techniques.
    • Promote secure and safe livelihoods to promote sustained economic and social mobility.
    • Integrate smart technologies and participatory strategies to enhance neighborhood-scale service delivery for all.
    • To guarantee long-term, widespread access to essential services and resilient livelihoods, and strengthen planning, finance, service delivery, and monitoring procedures.

Urbanization in India
  • Urbanisation in India is mostly the result of the economy’s deregulation after the 1990s, which sparked the growth of the private sector.
  • Only one-third of India’s population currently resides in urban regions, despite the country’s rapid urbanization.
  • Major urban sector projects have been initiated in India with the goal of enhancing access to services for the whole population and fortifying the urban system so that it can contribute more positively and significantly to the growth of the national economy.
  • According to the National Urban Livelihood Mission, people should have the necessary skills to find rewarding employment and contribute to the economy.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY)
  • The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY) is a government of India project that aims to provide affordable homes for economically disadvantaged parts of society.
  • The PMAY is applicable to both urban and rural construction.
    • PMAY Urban is a program that intends to build 2 million dwellings in cities.
    • PMAY Gramin is a rural housing scheme that intends to provide 4 crore dwellings.
  • By the end of March 2022, 20 million affordable homes are to be built under the PMAY program. Up to 2024, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin (PMAY-G) will be in effect.
  • The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana program was established to fill the growing gap between the supply and demand for urban homes.

Governance of UN Habitat

The program's governance structure comprises three decision-making entities: the UN-Habitat Assembly, an executive board, and a Committee of Permanent Representatives. The Governing Council used to be the decision-making body, but it was dissolved by a UN General Assembly resolution.The assembly, a universal body consisting of all 193 UN member states, meets every four years at UN-Habitat's Nairobi headquarters. The inaugural assembly took place in May 2019, presided over by Mexico. Martha Delgado Peralta, the Mexican Undersecretary of Multilateral Affairs and Human Rights, represented Mexico's presidency during the first assembly.
