The RRB ALP Selection Process is lengthy and consists of 4 stages, consisting of two Online Examinations – CBT 1 and CBT 2. Candidates shortlisted after qualifying for both these exams will then appear for the CBAT. Let us look at the details of the various stages of the selection process below
The First Stage CBT is a screening test to shortlist candidates for the next round. It includes 75 objective-type questions covering Mathematics, General Intelligence, General Science, and General Awareness. The test duration is 60 minutes, with a negative marking of 1/3rd for each wrong answer. Marks from CBT-1 won’t be counted in the final merit list. Shortlisting is done RRB-wise based on normalized marks and community-wise merit.
CBT-2 consists of two parts: Part A (100 questions in 90 minutes) and Part B (75 questions in 60 minutes). Part A Marks will be counted and includes Math, Reasoning, Basic Science & Engineering. Part B is qualifying in nature and tests trade-specific knowledge. Only those who qualify Part B and meet cut-offs in Part A are considered for the next stage. The number of candidates shortlisted is typically 15 times the number of vacancies. Negative marking applies and normalization is done for multi-shift exams.
CBAT is conducted for candidates who are shortlisted in CBT-2 (Part A), at eight times the number of vacancies. It tests aptitude relevant to ALP posts and includes multiple test. There's no negative marking, and candidates must clear each test section individually. The test is conducted only in English and Hindi. A vision certificate is mandatory for appearing in this stage. The final merit list combines CBT-2 Part A and CBAT scores in a 70:30 ratio.
Candidates who qualify the CBAT stage are called for Document Verification based on their merit. They must present original documents to verify age, education, community, reservation claims, etc. Candidates must also submit copies of the same documents and ensure all are valid and match their online details. Failure to produce valid documents can lead to disqualification. Final selection is subject to successful verification of documents and medical fitness.
After DV, candidates must undergo a medical examination to ensure they meet the medical standards required for the ALP post. The tests assess vision, general physical fitness, and other parameters as per railway medical classifications. Only those who pass the prescribed medical tests are finally considered fit for appointment. The Railway Administration has the final authority regarding fitness decisions.
As per the official notice, there is two Computer Based Tests which all the candidates have to appear for. Candidates should be familiar with the exam pattern for both these tests to qualify for the posts in the various RRBs across the country.
