Concept

The power factor of the alternator is given by:

\(cos\space ϕ={P\over S}\)

where, cosϕ = Power factor

P = Active power

Q = Reactive power

Calculation

Case 1: P = 200 kW and  cosϕ = 0.5 lagging

\(0.5={200\over S}\)

S = 400 KVA

Case 2: cosϕ = unity

Let the extra kW required is denoted by Px

PT = 200 + Px

\(1={P_T\over S}\)

PT = S

400 = 200 + Px

Px = 200 kW
