Question
Download Solution PDFFor the design of superelevation for mixed traffic conditions, the speed is reduced by:
Answer (Detailed Solution Below)
Detailed Solution
Download Solution PDFAs per IRC, the Centrifugal force corresponding to 75 % of the design speed is counteracted by providing the super elevation on horizontal curves. IRC recommends following formula for calculation of Super elevation :
\(e = \frac{{{V^2}}}{{225R}}\)
Where
e is the super elevation
R is the radius of the horizontal circular curve in ‘m’.
V is the design speed in ‘km/hr’.
So, The speed gets reduced by 100 - 75 = 25 %.
Note:
1. This has been done because India has mixed traffic conditions i.e. slow-moving and fast-moving vehicles.
2. The Superelevation calculated using the above formula should be less than the maximum permissible value and shall be more than the minimum value which is the camber of the road.
3. The remaining centrifugal force is balanced by friction on road.
