Explanation:

Oxyacetylene welding, commonly referred to as gas welding, is a process which relies on combustion of oxygen and acetylene.

The chemical action of the oxyacetylene flame can be adjusted by changing the ratio of the volume of oxygen to acetylene. Three distinct flame settings are used, neutral, oxidising and carburising.

Let X : Y be the ratio of oxygen to acetylene in the flame,

(i). If X : Y = 1 : 1 i.e. welding is carrying out using equal quantities (volume) of oxygen and acetylene, then flame will be neutral flameHence the ratio of ratio of acetylene to oxygen for a neutral flame used in gas welding is 1 : 1.

(ii). If X : Y = 2.5 : 1 i.e. welding is carrying out using with higher oxygen flow rate as compared to acetylene, then flame will be oxidising flame.

(iii). If X : Y = 1 : 2.5 i.e. welding is carrying out using with higher acetylene flow rate as compared to oxygen, then flame will be carburising or reducing flame.
