Additional InformationIron is found on earth mainly as insoluble ferric oxide. Iron can impart a bad taste to the water, causes discolouration in clothes, and incrustations in water mains.

  1. As it contains multivalent cations which are responsible for hardness in water.
  2. Reaction of iron oxide with water will lead to an increase in the concentration of CO2 which is responsible for the corrosiveness in water.
  3. As the colour of iron oxide is red, so it induces red colour in water.
  4. The presence of iron oxide does not cause a toxic effect in the water.
